About the role:

As the Design Manager for Aurizon, you will assume a critical role in managing and guiding the design process from concept to implementation for heavy Haul railway projects both asset renewal works and expansion projects.

Your primary focus will be coordinating across our design teams to ensure that designs align with project requirements, safety standards, and industry best practices. You will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, engineers, stakeholders, and external partners to drive the successful execution of design projects.

You will also work with external design houses to assist Aurizon in delivering the forward program of design activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and lead a team of skilled design professionals, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and excellence.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers and engineers to integrate design strategies into project objectives, timelines, and budgets.
  • Oversee the entire design lifecycle, from initial conceptualization to final implementation, ensuring designs meet project goals.
  • Conduct design reviews, provide feedback, and guide the team in refining design concepts for optimal outcomes.
  • Liaise with external design consultants, partners, and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Identify and address design-related challenges and risks, proactively finding solutions to ensure project success.
  • Stay current with industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in heavy haul rail design.
  • Establish and nurture strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate effective communication and collaboration.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a related field is desirable
  • 5+ years of experience in design management within the heavy haul rail or transportation sector.
  • Demonstrated experience leading design teams and managing complex projects from inception to completion.
  • Thorough understanding of Australian heavy haul rail industry standards, regulations, and design processes.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging and managing external design partners to deliver within an internal program
  • Strong organisational abilities, including the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and priorities.
